Screen sizes are diagonals

A 65-inch TV has a 65-inch (about 165 cm) diagonal, and the aspect ratio sets the width and height. On a 16:9 screen, width ≈ diagonal × 0.8716 and height ≈ diagonal × 0.4903, so a 65-inch picture is about 143.9 × 80.9 cm (56.7 × 31.9 in). Bezels and stands are not included, so check the product's outer dimensions when measuring your space.

Viewing distance and pixel density

The suggested viewing distance is where the screen fills 30° to 40° of your view, the range recommended by the film industry. "Pixels blend in from" is the distance at which one pixel spans one arcminute, the detail limit of 20/20 vision. Sitting closer than that is where higher resolutions make a visible difference.

Aspect ratios

  • 16:9: TVs and most monitors and laptops
  • 21:9 (really 64:27): ultrawide monitors
  • 16:10 and 3:2: some laptops and tablets
  • 19.5:9 and 20:9: recent smartphones
