Writing amounts on checks
On a US check, write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction of 100: "One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 50/100 dollars". Draw a line through the empty space after it so nothing can be added. Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen.
Other languages
- Spanish: "mil doscientos treinta y cuatro". Mexican checks read "MIL DOSCIENTOS TREINTA Y CUATRO PESOS 50/100 M.N."
- Chinese uppercase RMB, used on invoices and checks: 壹仟贰佰叁拾肆元伍角整
- Japanese formal numerals (daiji) on receipts: 金壱千弐百参拾四円也
- Korean contracts: 일금 일천이백삼십사원정
English uses the short scale, so a billion is 1,000,000,000. Spanish uses the long scale: "mil millones" is 1,000,000,000 and "un billón" is 1,000,000,000,000.
