Fuel economy units run in opposite directions
- km/L and mpg measure distance per unit of fuel, so higher is better. Korea and Japan use km/L, the US and UK use mpg.
- L/100 km measures fuel used per 100 km, so lower is better. Europe, China and Australia use it.
L/100 km is the inverse of the others, so there is no single multiplier. L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L, and L/100 km ≈ 235.215 ÷ US mpg. UK mpg uses the larger imperial gallon, so the same car scores about 20% higher than in US mpg.
